Although my blog and podcast are meant to remain neutral when it comes to religion or politics, I want to share something personal that has greatly influenced my healing journey. I often look to the Bible for guidance. The principles I’ve found there—and the association with others who try to live by them—have helped shape many of the good choices I’ve made in life. And honestly, the times I’ve experienced the most trouble were those when I failed to seek out or follow direction from that trusted source.
For me, Bible principles act as a kind of safeguard—much like the warning signs and guardrails on a road that help keep drivers from veering off a cliff. Trouble tends to show up when I ignore the signs.
Since beginning this healing journey—what I sometimes call recovering from a metaphorical car crash of my own making—I’ve been retracing my steps to better understand where I went wrong. Like an autopsy, it’s a way of uncovering the root causes, so healing can be intentional, not accidental.
Along the way, I’ve learned to pay more attention to both intuition and outside resources—spiritual and secular—that align with the core principles I hold dear. Interestingly, some of the most helpful tools I’ve stumbled upon came unexpectedly, often while I was pursuing something unrelated, like marketing my books or reconnecting with music. Others have come through deeper personal study and asking better questions.
One of the most pivotal moments in my healing came during a time of deep depression. A dear friend reminded me that it’s one thing to read an inspiring Bible account—like the story of Elijah running from Jezebel—but you get so much more out of it when you ask the right questions. One night, he, his wife, and I sat down and reflected on three simple but powerful questions—ones that may have come from Tony Robbins’ Personal Power series. I won’t share everything from that conversation, but here are the key questions that helped bring clarity to Elijah’s experience—and to mine:
- What did he focus on?
Because your energy flows where your focus goes. - What does this mean?
What you feel starts with what you focus on—and the meaning you assign to it. - What am I going to do?
The meaning we assign affects the actions we take.
These questions didn’t just bring insight—they brought hope. They gave me a lens through which I could examine my thoughts and choices more clearly, with honesty and compassion.
While I may return to this topic from time to time, I want to be clear that my goal is never to affiliate this platform with any one belief system. I respect that everyone’s healing journey looks different. This space is meant to be welcoming—a place where people can share useful information, stories of resilience, insights from books or personal study, and lessons learned from adversity.
Whether your compass is spiritual, secular, or somewhere in between, I hope what’s shared here resonates with your own journey toward healing and growth.
